U.S. Route 24 (US 24) crosses the Mississippi River at Quincy, Illinois via the Bay View Bridge [west bound traffic] and the Memorial Bridge [east bound traffic]. The Quincy Memorial Bridge was constructed in 1930 and remained structurally sound, but had lost the ability to handle the level of traffic needed by the 1980’s. The Bay View Bridge, completed in 1987, was constructed to the north of the Memorial Bridge to alleviate demand. Westbound traffic on US 24 was shifted to Broadway Street in Quincy when the Bay View Bridge was constructed with Memorial Bridge and Main Street in Quincy transitioned to eastbound traffic only. Memorial Bridge is currently on the Illinois Historic Bridge List and still remains structurally sound; however, the Illinois Department of Transportation determined replacement of the bridge has become necessary.
Prairie Engineers of Illinois is part of the Phase I design team for the study of the bridge replacement. The primary responsibilities are to support the completion of an Environmental Assessment (EA) and associated technical memorandum necessary for processing the EA.
